SUMMARY:Women Living into Hard and Holy Calls
DESCRIPTION:“Tell me a fact and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.” \n\n\n\n\nJust as we learn from the stories recorded in scripture\, we can learn from the stories of how God is moving in our lives today.  \n\n\n\nOn International Women’s Day\, New Church Ministry will feature two fascinating female ministers\, change-makers\, and leaders in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as guests on its latest New Church Hacks episode. Throughout their journey\, these women have been faced with adversity and defeat\, but have led with empowerment and liberation. Come and join us as we listen to these two amazing stories of how God ordained both of these women into hard and holy calls. \n\n\n\nGuests\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRev. Christy Jo Harber was born and raised in West Tennessee and received a Bachelors in Nonprofit Leadership from Murray State University. She graduated from Vanderbilt Divinity School in Nashville\, TN\, in 2017 with a Master of Divinity. She served as Associate Pastor at Eastwood Christian Church (2017-2020) in Nashville TN. \n\n\n\nChristy Jo began a wild and holy adventure serving as Woodland Christian Church’s Lead Pastor in Lexington\, KY at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. She is excited to share what God has been up to since her church learned it couldn’t return from virtual worship to the sanctuary and would need over a million dollars for building repair. \n\n\n\nChristy Jo is always looking and listening for the new thing God is doing. She is passionate about sharing the message of the liberating love of God and the intersectionality of race\, gender\, and sexuality. For fun she enjoys learning about the enneagram\, going hiking\, and exploring waterfalls! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReverend Erin Edwards is the lead pastor and founder of LOP( Live on Purpose) Community Church\, in Davis/Vacaville\, CA. Married in 2017 to her wife Chelsea\, they welcomed twin daughters\, Erilee and Evagrae\, in January 2019. Erin also became ordained in the Disciples of Christ during the pandemic and is co-pastor at the Christian Church of Woodland\, CA (Disciples of Christ). \n\n\n\nErin graduated with a Master’s degree in Ministry and Theology and is currently attending the Pacific School of Religion\, Berkeley for her Doctorate in Ministry. \n\n\n\nAs a gay\, African-American woman in ministry\, Erin is no stranger to opposition. Because of this\, Erin has been equipped with an understanding of the marginalized and has used it as a platform to combat injustice. With a passion for what God has for His people in the here and now\, Pastor Erin promotes a life lived not only with purpose but on purpose. Her voice and story speak directly to the soul\, waking people up to encounter and live out their God-given dreams. \n\n\n\nPastor Erin and Chelsea strive to build a community in which all people are free to experience the love of God\, regardless of age\, gender\, sexuality\, race\, etc.

SUMMARY:Creating Best Practices for Creation Care
DESCRIPTION:Hurricanes. Floods. Heatwaves. Our world is experiencing an increased amount of these natural disasters because of rising temperatures. What can Disciples do to address climate change and be responsible stewards of the environment? Learn the answer to this question and much more with host and Transitional Minister of New Church Strategies\, Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez\, at New Church Ministry’s New Church Hacks webinar. \n\n\n\nPanellists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Bell is the Minister for Indigenous Justice at the Center for Indigenous Ministries (DOC). In this role\, David has helped guide the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to recognize its settler-colonist roots\, repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery\, become more honest with its racist origins\, and engage in action-based Indigenous justice. \n\n\n\nThe son of Robert and Kay Bell\, David lives on the JustLiving Farm\, located in the Toppenish Creek valley of the Yakama Nation. With friends and neighbors\, the JustLiving Farm has become a place where folk are welcome to spend time talking about\, imagining\, and acting in favor of Creational justice. Believing creational wholeness and harmony is at our fingertips\, David invites us to question how our lives intersect with our local landscape\, listen for Creation’s insight to enhance our sibling’s well-being\, and open ourselves to her plea for action. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDan Paul is the Senior Pastor of First Christian Church of Huntsville\, TX. He will be consulting in oversight of Blue Theology with Creation Justice Ministries and will be part of the staff at the Blue Theology Outpost in Texas City\, Texas. He previously served at the Christian Church of Pacific Grove where he was the director of the Blue Theology Mission Station on the Monterey Bay. \n\n\n\n\n“In a time where there is a lot of ‘bad theology’ preached denying the climate crisis\, it is crucial that mainline church leaders speak out about how human beings are interdependent with nature and not removed from it.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrooks Berndt is the UCC’s Environmental Justice Minister. Before becoming the UCC Minister for Environmental Justice in 2015\, Berndt served as a pastor in Vancouver\, Washington\, where he was active in two successful environmental campaigns: transitioning the state of Washington away from its only coal plant and preventing the establishment of the largest marine oil terminal in the country in Vancouver. Berndt is the author of two books: Sounding the Trumpet: How Churches Can Answer God’s Call to Justice and Cathedral on Fire!: A Church Handbook for the Climate Crisis. As the Minister for Environmental Justice\, Berndt led the way in the issuing of the UCC’s 2020 report entitled “Breath to the People: Sacred Air and Toxic Pollution” which identifies 100 of the nation’s super polluters and how their toxic emissions threaten communities and children\, especially in places such as Houston\, Louisiana’s Cancer Alley\, and Ohio’s Lake Erie coast. Berndt writes and edits an environmental justice newsletter called The Pollinator\, while co-hosting monthly Creation Justice Webinars which have featured everyone from the climate scientist Katherine Hayhoe to Senator Cory Booker.

SUMMARY:16 Action-Hacks to Attack Racism
DESCRIPTION:People are suffering. How can the church show that it is listening? How do we exercise Biblical justice as Disciples of Christ? There are some practices that leaders\, congregations\, and organizations can adopt to eradicate systemic racism. The Bible is clear that all people are made in God’s image. Racism and oppression are against the heart of God\, who does not tolerate injustice. \n\n\n\nYou can courageously and radically transform your church and community into an active force for justice and solace when the world seems to tell certain people that they do not matter. Racism is a sin that needs to be called out. Will you use your voice? This episode of New Church Hacks will empower you to: \n\n\n\n\nDismantle racism from the pulpit and beyond\n\n\n\nEngage anti-racism training at all levels of formation in your church\n\n\n\nSupport organizations and community activists that are at the frontlines\n\n\n\nDiscuss different ways in which others are fighting against racism\n\n\n\nCelebrate humanity’s rich cultures and diverse ethnic backgrounds and traditions.\n\n\n\n\nThe featured guests included April Johnson (Minister of Reconciliation for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada)\, Mark Anderson (CEO and President of the National Benevolent Association) and Yvonne Gilmore (Associate Dean of the Disciples Divinity House at the University of Chicago). Joining us on Facebook Live for our Q&A was Nadine Compton (Creative Writer/Digital Media Specialist for Disciples Church Extension Fund).
