SUMMARY:Navigating Grief in Children and Youth Ministry
DESCRIPTION:Season 4\, Episode 2\n\n\n\n\n\nOur young people have been through a lot of compound grief in the last several years. Between school shootings and other forms of mass gun violence\, racial injustice\, and the ever-growing climate crisis\, the youth in our communities are feeling the stresses of our society on top of a global pandemic that has killed over 6 million people. How do you minister to them during this time? In this New Church Hacks episode\, our panellists will explore tangible ways we can minister to our young people and help them navigate the grief they are experiencing. \n\n\n\nPANELLISTS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristle Reed has worked in the education field for over 10 years. Each year has been directly focused on servicing the social/emotional needs of her students. She is also a published author with one of her books\, Hugs from the Sky\, being used across the United States to help support students with properly grieving the loss of a loved one. Outside of serving her students and writing\, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three amazing kids.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMariah Newell is an ordained minister who serves as the Kids\, Youth\, and Family Minister at Cypress Creek Christian Church in Northwest Houston\, Texas. Mariah has spent the last five years serving at Cypress Creek. Before that\, she served as the Program Director at Camp MoVal in Union\, Missouri. Ministering to kids and youth is where Mariah has and continues to feel called to serve. She feels passionate about telling others about the compassion\, innovation\, radical inclusion\, and love she sees the younger generations bring to the Table that tends to be overlooked or unappreciated. Mariah loves to spend her free time with her husband and their dog hiking and gardening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoselyn Spence serves as the Director of the National Benevolent Association (NBA)’s Mental Health and Wellness Initiative. In this position\, she works to design and implement programs that promote holistic wellness across all NBA programs. Joselyn has a wealth of experience in mental health and community care. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Registered Art Therapist (ATR)\, she received advanced education and training to provide trauma-informed services to diverse groups of people of all races\, backgrounds\, and ages from 3 to 80. Joselyn is a Registered Yoga and Meditation teacher (RYT-200)\, who has created embodied bible study experiences for the community. She is passionate about mental health care\, holistic wellness\, communal care ethics\, and spirituality. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRev. Margie Quinn hails from Nashville\, Tennessee. She is an ordained minister through the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and received her Master of Divinity in the spring of 2019 with a concentration in Preaching and a certificate in Gender\, Sexuality and Theology. \n\n\n\nMargie grew up working at summer camps across the southeast. She has been passionate about young people for as long as she can remember. Margie has served as the Summer Camp Director at Christmount Retreat Center in Black Mountain\, North Carolina and the Program Director at Bethany Hills Camp in Kingston Springs\, Tennessee. She is thrilled to continue her work in youth and young adult ministry as the Youth and Young Adult Minister at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Margie also coaches ultimate frisbee at a local Jewish middle school. Margie is the proud aunt of seven nieces and nephews.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNew Church Hacks provides practical (and sometimes peculiar) prompts for churches from start to restart. SUMMARY:Creating Best Practices for Creation Care
DESCRIPTION:Hurricanes. Floods. Heatwaves. Our world is experiencing an increased amount of these natural disasters because of rising temperatures. What can Disciples do to address climate change and be responsible stewards of the environment? Learn the answer to this question and much more with host and Transitional Minister of New Church Strategies\, Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez\, at New Church Ministry’s New Church Hacks webinar. \n\n\n\nPanellists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Bell is the Minister for Indigenous Justice at the Center for Indigenous Ministries (DOC). In this role\, David has helped guide the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to recognize its settler-colonist roots\, repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery\, become more honest with its racist origins\, and engage in action-based Indigenous justice. \n\n\n\nThe son of Robert and Kay Bell\, David lives on the JustLiving Farm\, located in the Toppenish Creek valley of the Yakama Nation. With friends and neighbors\, the JustLiving Farm has become a place where folk are welcome to spend time talking about\, imagining\, and acting in favor of Creational justice. Believing creational wholeness and harmony is at our fingertips\, David invites us to question how our lives intersect with our local landscape\, listen for Creation’s insight to enhance our sibling’s well-being\, and open ourselves to her plea for action. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDan Paul is the Senior Pastor of First Christian Church of Huntsville\, TX. He will be consulting in oversight of Blue Theology with Creation Justice Ministries and will be part of the staff at the Blue Theology Outpost in Texas City\, Texas. He previously served at the Christian Church of Pacific Grove where he was the director of the Blue Theology Mission Station on the Monterey Bay. \n\n\n\n\n“In a time where there is a lot of ‘bad theology’ preached denying the climate crisis\, it is crucial that mainline church leaders speak out about how human beings are interdependent with nature and not removed from it.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrooks Berndt is the UCC’s Environmental Justice Minister. Before becoming the UCC Minister for Environmental Justice in 2015\, Berndt served as a pastor in Vancouver\, Washington\, where he was active in two successful environmental campaigns: transitioning the state of Washington away from its only coal plant and preventing the establishment of the largest marine oil terminal in the country in Vancouver. Berndt is the author of two books: Sounding the Trumpet: How Churches Can Answer God’s Call to Justice and Cathedral on Fire!: A Church Handbook for the Climate Crisis. As the Minister for Environmental Justice\, Berndt led the way in the issuing of the UCC’s 2020 report entitled “Breath to the People: Sacred Air and Toxic Pollution” which identifies 100 of the nation’s super polluters and how their toxic emissions threaten communities and children\, especially in places such as Houston\, Louisiana’s Cancer Alley\, and Ohio’s Lake Erie coast. Berndt writes and edits an environmental justice newsletter called The Pollinator\, while co-hosting monthly Creation Justice Webinars which have featured everyone from the climate scientist Katherine Hayhoe to Senator Cory Booker.

SUMMARY:Women Living into Hard and Holy Calls
DESCRIPTION:“Tell me a fact and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.” \n\n\n\n\nJust as we learn from the stories recorded in scripture\, we can learn from the stories of how God is moving in our lives today.  \n\n\n\nOn International Women’s Day\, New Church Ministry will feature two fascinating female ministers\, change-makers\, and leaders in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as guests on its latest New Church Hacks episode. Throughout their journey\, these women have been faced with adversity and defeat\, but have led with empowerment and liberation. Come and join us as we listen to these two amazing stories of how God ordained both of these women into hard and holy calls. \n\n\n\nGuests\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRev. Christy Jo Harber was born and raised in West Tennessee and received a Bachelors in Nonprofit Leadership from Murray State University. She graduated from Vanderbilt Divinity School in Nashville\, TN\, in 2017 with a Master of Divinity. She served as Associate Pastor at Eastwood Christian Church (2017-2020) in Nashville TN. \n\n\n\nChristy Jo began a wild and holy adventure serving as Woodland Christian Church’s Lead Pastor in Lexington\, KY at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. She is excited to share what God has been up to since her church learned it couldn’t return from virtual worship to the sanctuary and would need over a million dollars for building repair. \n\n\n\nChristy Jo is always looking and listening for the new thing God is doing. She is passionate about sharing the message of the liberating love of God and the intersectionality of race\, gender\, and sexuality. For fun she enjoys learning about the enneagram\, going hiking\, and exploring waterfalls! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReverend Erin Edwards is the lead pastor and founder of LOP( Live on Purpose) Community Church\, in Davis/Vacaville\, CA. Married in 2017 to her wife Chelsea\, they welcomed twin daughters\, Erilee and Evagrae\, in January 2019. Erin also became ordained in the Disciples of Christ during the pandemic and is co-pastor at the Christian Church of Woodland\, CA (Disciples of Christ). \n\n\n\nErin graduated with a Master’s degree in Ministry and Theology and is currently attending the Pacific School of Religion\, Berkeley for her Doctorate in Ministry. \n\n\n\nAs a gay\, African-American woman in ministry\, Erin is no stranger to opposition. Because of this\, Erin has been equipped with an understanding of the marginalized and has used it as a platform to combat injustice. With a passion for what God has for His people in the here and now\, Pastor Erin promotes a life lived not only with purpose but on purpose. Her voice and story speak directly to the soul\, waking people up to encounter and live out their God-given dreams. \n\n\n\nPastor Erin and Chelsea strive to build a community in which all people are free to experience the love of God\, regardless of age\, gender\, sexuality\, race\, etc.

In this IMPACT webinar\, they’ll discuss how DisciplesNEXT offers a framework for church growth in a pandemic-informed context\, and how it can help set a course for the future of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. \n\n\n\nWhen the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) reached the two-decade goal of “starting 1\,000 churches in 1\,000 different ways\,” we might have relished celebrating our achievements. But 2020 was also marked by a racial reckoning\, a climate crisis\, and a global pandemic. Meanwhile\, the work of the 2020 Vision was far from complete. So\, New Church Ministry began shaping a framework for the future\, informed by the crises of the day\, yet based on Disciples fundamentals: our identity\, vision\, and mission.[1] \n\n\n\nDisciplesNEXT — which draws upon our core identity as a “movement for wholeness in a fragmented world” — strives to counter the church’s historic tendency to colonize as a means of growth. Instead\, DisciplesNEXT offers a methodology to train leaders as movement initiators that foster faithful communities; communities that exhibit the marks of the faithful church: true community\, deep Christian spirituality\, and a passion for justice. \n\n\n\nWhile this movement will\, naturally\, take many forms\, New Church Ministry aims to approach today’s challenges by equipping leaders to live into the Disciples Mission: “To be and to share the good news of Jesus Christ\, witnessing\, loving\, and serving from our doorsteps ‘to the ends of the Earth’.” \n\n\n\nTo equip Disciples movement initiators DisciplesNEXT will foster three core competencies in our leaders: Contemplative Action\, Prophetic Advocacy and Faith-Rooted Organizing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[1]Disciples Mission\, Vision\, and Confession

SUMMARY:Sacred Resistance: Moving Disciples from the Sanctuary to the Streets
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, Disciples have been starkly reminded of our call to be a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As the news cycle shares horrifying images and videos from the streets of Minneapolis\, Chicago\, and other cities in the United States\, Bible verses have been shared by Christians across the theological and political spectrum. Some have been used to uphold federal orders\, and others to encourage mercy\, compassion\, and welcome. Our Minister of New Church Strategies\, Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez\, joined guest panelists Rev. Dr. Jia Starr Brown and Rev. Tanya Lopez on Wednesday\, February 25 at 3:00 PM EST for the first IMPACT webinar of the year as New Church Ministry discussed what is happening and what our responses could be as Disciples of Christ. \n\n\n\nNew Church Ministry proudly presents IMPACT\, a new webinar series that welcomes you on a captivating journey of storytelling and deep mutual learning. In each episode\, host and Minister of New Church Strategies Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez invites guests who have defied conventions and fostered vibrant communities of faith to share their invaluable experiences and personal narratives. SUMMARY:2026 General Assembly
DESCRIPTION:The whole church throughout the United States and Canada\, is invited to attend General Assembly 2026. Ephesians 3:14-21 invites the Stone-Campbell tradition of today and tomorrow to be rooted and grounded in the love of God that surpasses knowledge and barriers to build fuller relationships and ministries led by the limitless love of God. The prayer that calls to the church in Ephesus also calls the Christian Church to set a bigger table that surpasses our previous capacity.More than just a series of meetings\, General Assembly is a covenantal table set for education\, discussion\, worship\, business\, fellowship\, and action. Each congregation is invited to boldly claim their covenantal place at the table by inviting everyone to attend online and by prayerfully designating 3 delegates to vote at General Assembly. Meeting every year online will allow more Disciples to connect more frequently and to work together more fully “to be the church we say we are.” If you’ve never attended General Assembly before\, a special welcome is extended to you. \n\n\n\nOne and all\, individuals\, Congregations\, General Ministries\, Regional Ministries\, Ministry partners\, and friends are invited to actively participate in our new way of being church and our church wide resolve to embody and share God’s surpassing love as we gather in July. \n\n\n\nFor these reasons: \n\n\n\n\nTranslation through closed captioning will be available in 5 languages including Spanish\, Korean\, French\, English\, and Chinese\, in the hope of removing language and accessibility barriers.\n\n\n\nYou can participate at a local gathering or on your personal device in the hope of removing the barriers of geography and isolation. The tech team has worked hard to make sure that GA is accessible and to train Regional and Congregational tech leaders to ensure that they didn’t create a new digital divide within the church.\n\n\n\nThe format and schedule include a Topic for Education\, Discussion\, and Prayer and time for dialogue to move beyond brief discussion accessible only to persons that attend GA in-person to include more voices from across the whole church.
