SUMMARY:Patriotic Heresy: Addressing and Countering Christian Nationalism
DESCRIPTION:Over the last several years\, the United States has seen a rise in Christian Nationalism from local governments to members of Congress who have self-identified as Christian Nationalists. The mainline church has held the belief that Christian Nationalism is undemocratic\, un-American\, and even antithetical to the Gospel. However\, the Church has not done a good job of countering these behaviors at an institutional level. Attend the first IMPACT webinar episode as New Church Ministry is joined by two members of the Baptist Joint Committee as we discuss the heretical dangers of Christian Nationalism and how we can help counter its presence in our local\, state\, and federal governments. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nGeorgia McKeeDigital Communications Associate \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeorgia McKee\, from Frisco\, Texas\, is the digital communications associate at BJC. She assists BJC’s communications teams with social media and content development\, and she manages and runs the TikTok account for Christians Against Christian Nationalism (available at the handle @endchristiannationalism). A former BJC intern\, McKee is a graduate student at the Wake Forest University School of Divinity\, working toward a Master of Divinity degree. She earned her B.A. in Faith & Social Justice from Belmont University. Previously\, she worked for The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Institute and local political campaigns\, and she co-founded Christian Athlete Circles. \n\n\n\nJaziah Masters Advocacy and Outreach Manager  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJaziah B. Masters\, originally from Dallas\, Texas\, is the advocacy and outreach manager at BJC. He coordinates a variety of education and advocacy efforts that educate\, engage and empower BJC’s supporters\, expanding the base of support for religious liberty.Masters is a 2017 graduate of Baylor University\, where he majored in political science. He earned his M.P.S. degree in the field of legislative affairs at George Washington University in 2020. Prior to joining BJC\, he interned on Capitol Hill in the office of U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield. Masters also interned in the office of Texas state Rep. Helen Giddings\, where he provided legislative and administrative support. \n\n\n\nResources\n\n\n\nBJC and NCM endorsed resources\n\n\n\nResponding to Christian Nationalism Curriculum — Christians Against Christian Nationalism\n\n\n\nThis curriculum informs a deeper dive into the dangers of Christian nationalism and is intended for churches and other small discussion groups. \n\n\n\nChristians Against Christian Nationalism statement\n\n\n\nThis online statement provides a more accurate picture of how American Christians view Christian nationalism. SUMMARY:General Assembly
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the 2023 General Assembly online and in person to celebrate the way that God’s expansive love connects each of us as “kin” and to part of the larger Kindom of God. \n\n\n\n“Once\, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come\, Jesus replied\, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed\, nor will people say\, ‘Here it is\,’ or ‘There it is\,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”\n\n\n\nLUKE 17:20-21 \n\n\n\nWorkshop\n\n\n\nWith dozens of workshops to choose from\, church leaders from across the life of the church can enrich their knowledge while connecting with others who are curious about the same topic. New Church Ministry invites to you to participate in DisciplesNEXT\, a workshop in the Within Us track hosted by Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez\, Minister of New Church Strategies\, on Tuesday\, August 1 at 10:15 AM. \n\n\n\nDisciplesNEXT\n\n\n\nOur context is a Post-Christendom\, global pandemic recovering world. Therefore\, we have to look into the quality and not the quantity when it comes to making new disciples and establishing new congregations. Through a collaboration of New Church Ministry\, the Office of the General Minister and President\, and the College of Regional Ministers came a framework to lead us into the “Next Normal.” Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez will present the DisciplesNEXT Framework that will demonstrate how our Church will start new faith communities to be a “Movement for Wholeness” in a Pandemic Informed World. \n\n\n\nExhibition Booth\n\n\n\nOur ministry will also be present in the exhibit hall at booth #516 with Disciples Church Extension Fund (DCEF)\, where we will be offering space to create your own prayer beads and learn more about contemplative action as a core value in ministry. We will also be providing giveaways – cruise by for NCM-branded swag!

SUMMARY:2023 Pentecost Offering
DESCRIPTION:We are a Movement for Wholeness in a Fragmented World \n\n\n\nIn the beginning\, every church was new. \n\n\n\nIt’s right there in the Book of Acts. Early disciples came together\, sharing all things in common\, breaking bread with glad and generous hearts. God was doing a new thing:  creating a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. In the beginning\, Jesus sent out disciples\, two by two\, not to “plant” churches\, but to proclaim good news\, to experience the hospitality and wisdom of neighbors all around. At New Church Ministry\, we believe God is calling the whole Church back to becoming new… back to becoming who we are: a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. \n\n\n\nYour gifts to the 2023 Pentecost Offering\, received this year in most congregations on Sundays\, May 21 and May 28\, help ensure our movement continues to embody the Disciples of Christ vision: to be and to share the Good News\, witnessing\, loving and serving from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth. \n\n\n\nHalf of your gift supports the local new church movement through your region’s ministry. The other half supports New Church Ministry efforts across the United States and Canada to train\, equip\, assist\, and multiply new leaders and their communities of faith.  \n\n\n\nSo\, thank you. For participating in the new thing God is still doing — just as in the beginning. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial days in the life of the church often allow us to focus our worship\, celebrations and fellowship around moments that are central to our faith. \n\n\n\nDisciples Mission Fund (DMF) Special Day Offerings provide an opportunity to highlight specific ministries as part of our faith celebrations. Congregations can receive these offerings during worship or budget for a special gift\, and individuals can always designate their gift to DMF for any of these offerings.

SUMMARY:Women Living into Hard and Holy Calls
DESCRIPTION:“Tell me a fact and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.” \n\n\n\n\nJust as we learn from the stories recorded in scripture\, we can learn from the stories of how God is moving in our lives today.  \n\n\n\nOn International Women’s Day\, New Church Ministry will feature two fascinating female ministers\, change-makers\, and leaders in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as guests on its latest New Church Hacks episode. Throughout their journey\, these women have been faced with adversity and defeat\, but have led with empowerment and liberation. Come and join us as we listen to these two amazing stories of how God ordained both of these women into hard and holy calls. \n\n\n\nGuests\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRev. Christy Jo Harber was born and raised in West Tennessee and received a Bachelors in Nonprofit Leadership from Murray State University. She graduated from Vanderbilt Divinity School in Nashville\, TN\, in 2017 with a Master of Divinity. She served as Associate Pastor at Eastwood Christian Church (2017-2020) in Nashville TN. \n\n\n\nChristy Jo began a wild and holy adventure serving as Woodland Christian Church’s Lead Pastor in Lexington\, KY at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. She is excited to share what God has been up to since her church learned it couldn’t return from virtual worship to the sanctuary and would need over a million dollars for building repair. \n\n\n\nChristy Jo is always looking and listening for the new thing God is doing. SUMMARY:Creating Best Practices for Creation Care
DESCRIPTION:Hurricanes. Floods. Heatwaves. Our world is experiencing an increased amount of these natural disasters because of rising temperatures. What can Disciples do to address climate change and be responsible stewards of the environment? Learn the answer to this question and much more with host and Transitional Minister of New Church Strategies\, Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez\, at New Church Ministry’s New Church Hacks webinar. \n\n\n\nPanellists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Bell is the Minister for Indigenous Justice at the Center for Indigenous Ministries (DOC). In this role\, David has helped guide the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to recognize its settler-colonist roots\, repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery\, become more honest with its racist origins\, and engage in action-based Indigenous justice. \n\n\n\nThe son of Robert and Kay Bell\, David lives on the JustLiving Farm\, located in the Toppenish Creek valley of the Yakama Nation. With friends and neighbors\, the JustLiving Farm has become a place where folk are welcome to spend time talking about\, imagining\, and acting in favor of Creational justice. Believing creational wholeness and harmony is at our fingertips\, David invites us to question how our lives intersect with our local landscape\, listen for Creation’s insight to enhance our sibling’s well-being\, and open ourselves to her plea for action. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDan Paul is the Senior Pastor of First Christian Church of Huntsville\, TX. He will be consulting in oversight of Blue Theology with Creation Justice Ministries and will be part of the staff at the Blue Theology Outpost in Texas City\, Texas. He previously served at the Christian Church of Pacific Grove where he was the director of the Blue Theology Mission Station on the Monterey Bay. \n\n\n\n\n“In a time where there is a lot of ‘bad theology’ preached denying the climate crisis\, it is crucial that mainline church leaders speak out about how human beings are interdependent with nature and not removed from it.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrooks Berndt is the UCC’s Environmental Justice Minister. Before becoming the UCC Minister for Environmental Justice in 2015\, Berndt served as a pastor in Vancouver\, Washington\, where he was active in two successful environmental campaigns: transitioning the state of Washington away from its only coal plant and preventing the establishment of the largest marine oil terminal in the country in Vancouver. Berndt is the author of two books: Sounding the Trumpet: How Churches Can Answer God’s Call to Justice and Cathedral on Fire!: A Church Handbook for the Climate Crisis. As the Minister for Environmental Justice\, Berndt led the way in the issuing of the UCC’s 2020 report entitled “Breath to the People: Sacred Air and Toxic Pollution” which identifies 100 of the nation’s super polluters and how their toxic emissions threaten communities and children\, especially in places such as Houston\, Louisiana’s Cancer Alley\, and Ohio’s Lake Erie coast. Berndt writes and edits an environmental justice newsletter called The Pollinator\, while co-hosting monthly Creation Justice Webinars which have featured everyone from the climate scientist Katherine Hayhoe to Senator Cory Booker.

SUMMARY:Georgia Regional Assembly
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce that Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez (interim Minister of New Church Strategies) will be delivering a workshop\, accompanied by Program Coordinator Wesley King\, on pandemic-informed church at the Christian Church in Georgia’s in-person Regional Assembly. \n\n\n\nParticipants at the assembly will be convening around the theme “Re-church: Re-cast Your Net” from John 21. \n\n\n\nIn this chapter\, we read of the disciples who\, when faced with a new reality\, tried to go back to fishing—and the way they’d always done it. But even that — what they thought they knew — was no longer working. That’s when Jesus showed up and said\, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat\, and you will find some.” With their nets breaking from the fish they had caught\, they recognized Jesus. \n\n\n\nWith the new realities faced by churches and people of faith\, it’s time to discover where Jesus is inviting us to cast our nets. Hosted by First Christian Church\, Athens\, the 170th Georgia Regional Assembly will include opportunities for learning\, worship\, and reconnecting for Disciples of all ages. Here are some highlights: \n\n\n\nFood Truck Tailgate Dinner will open the Regional Assembly on Friday evening at 5 pm. This is a town that knows how to tailgate —you won’t want to miss the fun and reconnecting!\n\n\n\nOpening Worship is November 11\, at 7 pm\, featuring Rev. Dr. Amy Butler\, Interim Senior Minister of National City Christian Church\, Washington\, D.C.Youth will participate in the Regional Assembly with Youth Lock-in Friday evening through Saturday. A Children’s Program for grades K-5 and Nursery Care for infants through Pre-K also will be available Friday evening and Saturday.Saturday Session for November 12 includes Rev. Dr. Nathan Brown\, Senior Pastor of Sandy Springs Christian Church\, leading a morning Bible study\, followed by “worshipful work” combining worship\, business\, celebration\, and connecting.Saturday Lunch Options will include a luncheon hosted by Disciples Women with Rev. Sylvia Stroy\, former Moderator of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgia\, presenting “Called as Women to Serve with Joy & Purpose.” Disciples Men will host lunch with Rev. Tom Edmondson\, Pastor of First Christian Church of Atlanta\, Tucker\, speaking on “Being a Christian Man in Today’s World.”

SUMMARY:CCDA National Conference
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join Rev. Dr. Jose Martinez\, interim Minister of New Church Strategies\, at the Christian Community Development Organization‘s 2022 conference\, where the theme is wellbeing. Here is more information about the event: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTogether\, we will seek Wellbeing for our world\, for our nation\, for our communities\, and for each other. Wellbeing isn’t just about being happy. Rather\, Wellbeing is about finding fulfillment in what we do each day\, the quality of our relationships\, the vibrancy of our spiritual health\, the vitality of our organizations\, and the love we experience in our communities. \n\n\n\nYou can prioritize your Wellbeing by building authentic connections with other Christian Community Development (CCD) leaders and organizers gathered in Charlotte. While there\, you will be able to hear inspirational and relevant sermons\, expand your network of support\, and learn how to help your community experience Wellbeing. \n\n\n\nThis year’s gathering is inspired by Isaiah 40: 29 – 31 which reminds us that God gives power to the faint and strength to the powerless. In other words\, when we “wait” for the Lord\, we can rejoice in knowing that though we sometimes become weary and exhausted\, there remains a path to renewed Wellbeing. CCDA’s National Conference can be your place of “waiting”\, as you seek to remain faithful to God’s call to seek justice with and for the marginalized. \n\n\n\n[God] gives power to the faint\, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary\, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength\, they shall mount up with wings like eagles\, they shall run and not be weary\, they shall walk and not faint.\nIsaiah 40:29-31\, NRSV\n\nWill you join us on this path to WELLBEING? We can’t wait to see you in Charlotte 🙌🏾

SUMMARY:Navigating Grief in Children and Youth Ministry
DESCRIPTION:Season 4\, Episode 2\n\n\n\n\n\nOur young people have been through a lot of compound grief in the last several years. Between school shootings and other forms of mass gun violence\, racial injustice\, and the ever-growing climate crisis\, the youth in our communities are feeling the stresses of our society on top of a global pandemic that has killed over 6 million people. How do you minister to them during this time? In this New Church Hacks episode\, our panellists will explore tangible ways we can minister to our young people and help them navigate the grief they are experiencing. \n\n\n\nPANELLISTS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristle Reed has worked in the education field for over 10 years. Each year has been directly focused on servicing the social/emotional needs of her students. She is also a published author with one of her books\, Hugs from the Sky\, being used across the United States to help support students with properly grieving the loss of a loved one. Outside of serving her students and writing\, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three amazing kids.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMariah Newell is an ordained minister who serves as the Kids\, Youth\, and Family Minister at Cypress Creek Christian Church in Northwest Houston\, Texas. Mariah has spent the last five years serving at Cypress Creek. Before that\, she served as the Program Director at Camp MoVal in Union\, Missouri. Ministering to kids and youth is where Mariah has and continues to feel called to serve. She feels passionate about telling others about the compassion\, innovation\, radical inclusion\, and love she sees the younger generations bring to the Table that tends to be overlooked or unappreciated. Mariah loves to spend her free time with her husband and their dog hiking and gardening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoselyn Spence serves as the Director of the National Benevolent Association (NBA)’s Mental Health and Wellness Initiative. In this position\, she works to design and implement programs that promote holistic wellness across all NBA programs. Joselyn has a wealth of experience in mental health and community care. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Registered Art Therapist (ATR)\, she received advanced education and training to provide trauma-informed services to diverse groups of people of all races\, backgrounds\, and ages from 3 to 80. Joselyn is a Registered Yoga and Meditation teacher (RYT-200)\, who has created embodied bible study experiences for the community. She is passionate about mental health care\, holistic wellness\, communal care ethics\, and spirituality. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRev. Margie Quinn hails from Nashville\, Tennessee. She is an ordained minister through the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and received her Master of Divinity in the spring of 2019 with a concentration in Preaching and a certificate in Gender\, Sexuality and Theology. \n\n\n\nMargie grew up working at summer camps across the southeast. She has been passionate about young people for as long as she can remember. Margie has served as the Summer Camp Director at Christmount Retreat Center in Black Mountain\, North Carolina and the Program Director at Bethany Hills Camp in Kingston Springs\, Tennessee. She is thrilled to continue her work in youth and young adult ministry as the Youth and Young Adult Minister at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Margie also coaches ultimate frisbee at a local Jewish middle school. Margie is the proud aunt of seven nieces and nephews.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNew Church Hacks provides practical (and sometimes peculiar) prompts for churches from start to restart. This free webinar series\, hosted by Jose Martinez (interim Minister of New Church Strategies)\, is jam-packed with clever solutions to tricky problems and empowers courageous leaders with the tools\, tips and how-tos to start\, sustain and strengthen congregations. For regular updates\, be sure to check this page and follow along on social media with #NewChurchHacks! \n\n\n\nA link to a recording of the webinar will be emailed to all registrants after the episode airs\, regardless of attendance. \n\n\n\nWhile this webinar takes place on Zoom\, you can also join us on New Church Ministry’s Facebook page\, where the episode will be streamed live.

SUMMARY:2022 Pentecost Offering: Turning Struggle into Steadfastness
DESCRIPTION:Stories of struggle are nothing new to the church. \n\n\n\nFrom the persecution faced by early Christians to civil rights movements led by faith leaders\, the church has found its strength in times of unrest. \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic is yet another chapter in this long history\, both nothing unique and yet entirely different.  \n\n\n\nThrough it all\, Disciples have been steadfast. By launching emerging congregations\, they have stepped up to care for communities in need. \n\n\n\nBut they don’t do it alone. \n\n\n\nWith the help of regional and general ministries\, these brave leaders have been provided with facilities to conduct their outreach activities and with online educational opportunities\, such as Leadership Academy. \n\n\n\nBy making a gift to the 2022 Pentecost Offering\, received in most congregations on Sundays\, May 29 and June 5\, you can ensure that the new church movement continues to prosper in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. \n\n\n\nEach year\, half of these gifts go to your own region to support local new church development. The other half goes to New Church Ministry\, which trains\, equips\, assists\, and multiplies new church leaders across the U.S. and Canada through programs such as coaching\, New Church Hacks\, and Water the Plants. \n\n\n\nPlanning\, nurturing\, and sustaining new places of worship is part of the Disciples’ vision – participation in this Special Day Offering helps this vision come to life. \n\n\n\nPlease consider making a generous gift to this year’s Pentecost Offering. \n\n\n\nResources\, including graphics\, stories to share\, and videos\, can be found on the Pentecost Offering page located on Disciples Mission Fund (DMF) website. Please note: No bulletin inserts\, posters\, or envelopes will be mailed to congregations\, but they are available on the DMF website. If you need envelopes\, please email supplies@disciples.org  \n\n\n\nStories from previous years’ Pentecost Offerings can be found here.
